About this Workshop

The ʻĀina-Based STEM Educator Workshop is an opportunity for educators to explore how Pacific Indigenous ancestral knowledge and contemporary science can be woven together in STEM educations contexts to create learning experiences that strengthen students’ cultural identities, build up their confidence and agency, and support just and sustainable socio-ecological futures.

During this workshop, we will share strategies and tools for teaching with multiple ways of knowing inspired by over a decade of experience with science education across formal and informal settings.

Most recently including time spent teaching at Hoʻākea (an outdoor learning program for K-12 students and teachers in Hawaiʻi centered around how everyday cultural practices and traditions support disciplinary learning), as well as at the University of Washington teaching Pacific Indigenous Astrophysics (a post-secondary course that integrates Pacific ancestral and contemporary ways of studying the night sky to support students with developing a sense of agency and responsibility around knowledge).

We will invite attendees to share their experiences and reflect on what multiple ways of knowing might look like when implemented into their communities.
